Aubrey Gomez, a Senior at Zeeland High School, attended the 85th annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program at Michigan State University in East Lansing as a representative of the Gilbert D. Karsten American Legion Auxiliary. She joined us at our monthly meeting on August 10th to share her experiences and show her appreciation for the opportunity to participate in Girls State. Mary Kraai, Post 33 ALA Girls State Coordinator, prepared Aubrey for the program held in June.

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program provides young ladies who are currently juniors in high school with the opportunity to learn about our local and state government with hands-on application. Girls from across the state gather in one location for a week to further their civic education and understanding, develop leadership skills, and learn an appreciation for patriotism and service through government simulations, activities, and classroom study.

If you or someone you know would be interested in attending Girls State this coming summer, we would like to offer you the opportunity to attend. Military affiliation is not required. The only requirement is that the young lady is a junior attending a local school within the Zeeland community and has an interest in learning about our local and state government. This has been a great opportunity for many young ladies across the state to make lifelong friendships and to further their view of what serving their community can be like.
