Room Changes - June 4, 2016

Parlor

We have changed the displays in both corner cabinets in the parlor. The theme for these displays is home entertainment.

Veterans' Memorial Room

We have just updated the FIELD OF HONOR wall with the list of local veterans who are buried in the Zeeland Cemetery, in national cemeteries or abroad.

The list, furnished by Attorney James Donkersloot, was effective on Memorial Day 2016.

Our wall lists veterans from the following wars / conflicts:

  • Civil War and Sp-American War
  • World War I
  • World War II
  • Korean War
  • Vietnam War and post Vietnam era

Toy Room

We recently placed our rare toy kitchen in a protective display case. The Kitchen Diorama is one of the most interesting toys in our toy room.

It is made out of wood, has three walls and a floor papered to look like tiles.

The room is furnished with numerous tin miniatures including pots and pans, a grater, fish mold, dustpan, basin and two sinks. It is also equipped with a wooden chopping clock, a breadboard and a table. The focal point of the room is a bright red stove with a golden oven door.

A large number of educational toy kitchens like this one were once made in Europe.

Today they are quite rare.

Dining Room

We opened the doors of the step-back style china cabinet and installed plexi-glass to protect our treasured collection.

Flow Blue earthenware originated in the 1820s by Staffordshire potters in England and was produced until the early 1900s. The name comes from the blue glaze that blurred or "flowed" during the firing process.
