Stories of Belonging
in West Michigan

Welcome to We the People: Stories of Belonging in West Michigan.

This collection of oral histories offers a glimpse into the lived experiences, perspectives, and stories of neighbors across West Michigan. Each voice reflects a piece of our shared history. These excerpts are part of our larger America250 Michigan project, created to celebrate this milestone anniversary of the United States of America. The stories here honor the many ways people contribute to the fabric of community. We invite you to listen, reflect, and see yourself in these stories.

By capturing the core question “What does it mean to be an American?” and the adjacent question “What does it mean to be a Michigander?” we strengthen our understanding of who we are as a community. Preserving these voices ensures that future generations inherit not just dates and events, but the real, lived experiences of the people who built and continue to shape this place.

These interviews are part of a collaborative project funded by an America250 Michigan grant and jointly led by the Holland Museum and the Zeeland Historical Society. The project also includes a dual-location exhibit at both museums.
